The Ashes of Creation user interface (UI) is built with customization in mind.[4]

The UI will be very adaptable for many play styles.[5]Steven Sharif

UI settings

UI settings are able to be saved locally.[6]

Various display elements can be toggled on or off:[7]

Action bar

Alpha-0 Ranger ability icons.

Players can build their characters with the active skills they want.[8]

  • Players are not given skills as they level up, they must choose what skills they take.[9]
  • The number of skills on the action bar will be contained (fewer than 30).[8]
  • For example: One Fighter will be different from another based on what active skills they have chosen.[8]
  • Through skill choice, players can customize their combat experience to focus on tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both.[10]
  • There is no spellbook requiring memorization.[11]

Combat targeting

Through skill choice, players can customize their combat experience to focus on tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both.[10]

  • It may not be possible to be able to fully spec into just action or tab targeted skills. There might be a 75% cap on choosing skills from any one type.[13]

Skill progressions, skill point allocation is determined by the player. The player will be able to choose either more tab-target oriented skills or more action-based skills and customize their playable experience to what accommodates their preference. From a balancing standpoint for us developers, we need to make sure that certain abilities house certain functions so that there's a balance between skill shots and tab-target abilities.[13]Steven Sharif

Alpha-1 development will focus on merging action combat with tab targeted combat.[14]

The developers are using a targeting reticle when testing out action combat.[16]

  • There may be a hot key to toggle reticle mode on and off.[16]
  • Left mouse click is used for basic weapon attacks.[17]
  • Right mouse click is used as a "focus" button. It can also be used to activate root motion attacks for melee.[17]

Action oriented and tab oriented versions of skills will have different characteristics. Variables will change based on which version is chosen.[18]

As an example: Let's say you're playing a ranged class. You could have an action-oriented power shot in your skill tree or you could have a single target power shot that ramps up and does more damage. [18]Steven Sharif

For the purposes of balance, certain skill types will be either tab or action oriented skills. For example:[19]

  • Hard Crowd control (CC)s may be housed in action oriented skills because they are skill shots that are more difficult to land.[19][13]
  • Softer CC's would be housed in tab-targeted abilities.[19]

Arch lightning Launch a bolt of lightning in a forward line, damaging all within its path.[20][21] Adds damage over time to targets hit.[21] Chains to nearby enemies that are not hit. Anyone who is outside the line has a chance to get a bolt jump to them.[21]
Flame line Shoot an arrow that leaves behind a trail of flames.[22] Arrow explodes upon reaching the end of its distance.[22] Enemies take burning damage for entering the flames.[22]
Melee strike Does damage and adds hate.[23] Damage over time hate over time.[23] Changes to cone effect.[23]
Power shot Use this skill to charge up a shot that fires forward in a line, damaging all enemies it touches.[24][25] Chance to cause bleed damage over time.[24][25] Splits into a fan of arrows in a cone. Radius increases based on hold duration.[25]
Quake If your focus is at 80%, cast this spell to split the earth itself before you, launching a line of AoE damage.[20][26] Knock down those hit by your arcane might.[20][26] Reduces focus cost and cooldown for the skill.[26]
Righteous fury Use your ultimate when your focus has reached 80%, to launch spears at all targets within your forward arc. Dealing damage and pulling them to you.[27] Pulls targets in a cone to the caster and does damage.[28] Adds target lock and hate. All targets pulled now target lock the Tank and their hate is increased.[28] Increases the arc radius to 360°.[28]
Shield might Single target knock down or stun (bash).[29] Changes to a frontal cone attack.[29] Increases the block chance for a duration after success. Duration of block chance increases based on the number of targets hit.[29]
Shield throw Throws shield and adds hate.[30] Changes to cone attack.[30] Add stun to the first target hit.[30]
Slice Cone melee attack.[31] Becomes a 360° melee attack.[31] Adds hemorrhage (bleed) damage.[31]

Charge Charge to a single target on the battlefield (friend or enemy) and do damage to enemy targets upon reaching them.[32] Additional physical and magical mitigation upon reaching the target for a short duration.[32] Does damage and knocks down enemies between caster and target.[32]
Charged beam Channels a beam attack to a single target.[33] Damages over time after channel.[33] Damages enemies between caster and target.[33]
Cover Target a friendly player, to absorb 50% of their incoming damage for 6 seconds.[27][34] Increases damage that's redirected.[34] Gives the target damage reduction buff for the duration. The damage reduction applies to both the tank and the ally.[34]
Endow life Resurrect target if they are dead. Prevents death if they are alive. Resurrected players don't return to life at 100% health and mana values.[35] Increases duration of death prevention buff.[35] Resurrects target to 100% hit points and mana points.[35]
Hatred Single target that adds hate.[36] Add a forced target lock.[36] Add hate over time per tick.[36]
Ice prison Target an enemy and summon a prison of ice around them, paralyzing them.[20][37] Adds damage over time.[37] Snares after root breaks.[37]
Impale Target an enemy and lauch a spear to damage and pull the enemy into melee range.[27] Lasso effect pulls the target to the tank and does damage.[29] Adds a stun.[29] Adds damage over time.[29]
Implosion Launch a powerful burst of fire (fireball) against a single target.[20][38] Becomes a burn (damage over time).[38][20] Area of effect around the target.[38]
Knockback shot Knocks a target back X distance.[39] Adds damage.[39] Add knockdown.[39]
Life bolt Deal damage to enemy based on the casters missing health.[40] Adds an area of effect.[40] Slows enemies hit by the blast.[40]
Longsword combo Target an enemy and use your sword and shield to strike with multiple blows. Dealing damage and powering up your focus with this weapon attack.[27] - -
Mage's private sanctum Targeted party member (can be self) is removed from combat for duration. They are sent to some extra dimensional location.[41] Banished target gets extra mana while banished.[41] Reduced cooldown.[41]
Marked arrow Target an enemy to use this skill, causing that enemy to take additional physical damage.[24][42] Enemy takes additional magical damage.[42] Increases the duration of this debuff.[42]
Righteous blessing Deliver a spot heal.[43] Adds heal over time.[43] Adds damage over time to adjacent enemies.[43]
Shield might Single target knock down or stun (bash).[29] Changes to a frontal cone attack.[29] Increases the block chance for a duration after success. Duration of block chance increases based on the number of targets hit.[29]
Shield throw Throws shield and adds hate.[30] Changes to cone attack.[30] Add stun to the first target hit.[30]
Snare Foot pin roots target in place.[24][42] Adds a bleed.[42] Snares after root expires.[42]
Soul paralysis Channel a lock down of a single target. Both you and the enemy are held in place.[44] Increased resistances to being disabled.[44] Caster takes reduced damage while channeling.[44]
Spellbook combo Target an enemy and use magic missiles from your spellbook to strike with multiple blows. Dealing damage and powering up your focus with this weapon attack.[20] - -
Staff combo Target an enemy and use your staff to strike with multiple blows. Dealing damage and powering up your focus with this weapon attack.[45] - -
Trap Place a bear trap under the caster that holds them in place and does damage. Also holds targets in place and does damage.[46] Traps stun instead of root.[46] Place up to two traps.[46]

Gear slots

There are 16 gear slots in Ashes of Creation:[48]

Control settings

Players will be able to customize their keyboard control scheme.[49]

Alpha-1 may include hotkey customization (keybinds).[50]

Macros

The issue with macros is that from an anti cheat metric perspective it's difficult to define what a macro is against a script. And in order to catch all scripts sometimes you have to prevent the macro usage. So really that's a that's a data issue. If we allow for macros then we lose our ability to precisely ban script users, botters.[51]Steven Sharif

Controller support

The game is not designed around controller support.[52]

Controller support will likely be something we work on closer to launch.[53]Steven Sharif

Camera settings

The developers aim to provide a variety of camera options.[54]

World map

The world of Verra features an in game viewable world map. This map is not randomly generated, and begins covered in a fog of war.[58] Players will not be able to see the world until they have explored it or gathered information about it. The world is also full of imperfect information, which will require the player to act on it for verification.[59]

For example, you may hear a rumor in a tavern that tells you the location of a cave full of weak Kobolds, but this was not accurate as the rumor was started by well-equipped bandits in order to waylay overconfident adventurers.[59]

When information is gathered, or the player has successfully explored an area, points of interest are marked on the map. This includes Dungeons, Raids and Cities.

These points of interest are determined by Node progression; and not every server will share the same map, as player decisions will vary server to server.[60]

In addition to node progression being a factor on map generation, zones in Ashes of Creation will cater to all levels.[61]

Mini map

There will be an in-game mini map in Alpha-1 or Alpha-2.[62]

Character creator

The character creator (or character customization screen) allows players to define the look of their character in Ashes of Creation.[64]

We're gonna have a wide array of character customization out of the box.[65]

If I had to give a comparison, I would use BDO as an example of what our Character Creation is going for.[66]

A character's voice may be able to be selected from preset options.[67]

Character appearance

We want there to be a lot of room for people to manifest their own identity, to role play how they want to from an appearance standpoint. There's going to be parameters within which you will be able to customize a character. We want the culture and the identity of the races to exist in a range that makes them easily identifiable from other players and other cultures. So, because of that, we have to have a spectrum you can exist on. There will be a lot of hair variants you can do, body art tattoos that you can apply. You'll be able to play with the scales of the facial structure, the bones, the height, width, the body fat percentage. You'll be able to add body hair on different parts of the body. If you want to have hair on your feet, you can dial that up.[70]Steven Sharif

Character appearance can be customized in the character creator (CC)[71] and via in-game salons/barbershops.[72]

  • Character models are focused on realism.[73]
  • A player will see a generic character before customization.[74]
  • Player can adjust their character to be overweight, skinny, muscular.[75]
  • Character designs will have influences from a wide range of cultures, such as European, African and Asian.[76]
  • Lolis will not be in the game.[77]

Sliders will offer flexibility in customization.[78]

  • Hair variants.[70]
    • Can add hair on different parts of the body.
  • Body art.[70]
  • Facial structure.[70]
  • Bone structure.[70]
  • Height.[70]
    • You can't have a one inch tall character.[79]
  • Width.[70]
  • Body fat percentage.[70]

Adjustments will allow a character to appear more feminine or masculine.[80]

  • Brow height.[80]
  • Chin.[80]
  • Hair.[80]
  • Facial hair.[81]
    • Female Dwarven beards will not match that of the male. It will be more of a braided option that is not as voluminous.[70]
    • Facial hair is characteristic of the Dünir, not the Niküa.[70]
  • Body type.[80]
  • There will be "boobie sliders".[79]
    • These are relative to the character's race.
    • The scale is not going to be ridiculous.

Character appearance is able to be saved to hard disc.[82]

Character naming

Characters will have a first-name and an optional surname.[83]

  • There is a minimum length of three for a character name.[84]

Character names will appear on the character sheet and optionally on the character website page.[85]

  • In-game a character's name is displayed above their head. This can be the first or last name.[85]

Early access

Alpha-1 phase 2 will include a Character creator.[15]

I would like to have the option for players to go in spend time, create characters save that character and then have it available in their suite their character creation suite as an option to preload at launch that they can take that's those settings and launch the character. I would love for there to be community rewards and competitions for the best made characters that we could do like a monthly kind of thing around and/or additionally I'd like for there to be implementation of housing and a housing suite that you can save your furniture load out as well for building out the interior of housing. I don't know if we'll be able to get to that. It is a cherry on top of the icing. And we'll see how the schedule looks with that regard.[86]Steven Sharif

Accessibility settings

There will be settings to aid colorblind players.[87]

Maturity level

Dead bodies in a Pre-alpha raid encounter.[88]

There may be an option to turn off blood and gore in the game.[89]

There probably won't be swearing in quests.[90]

The antagonists in this game are definitely dark... We're not going grimdark at all, but there are parts of it that get that way.[90]Jeffrey Bard

Addons/mods

Addons will not be allowed, in general.[4]

  • The developers don't want addons/mods to be necessary to experience the game.
  • The developers believe that parsers (DPS meters) can have negative effects.
  • The design of the game API is still under consideration.[92]
    • There will be integrations available for streaming services such as Twitch and a few other services, but it's not something that will be exposed through an API just yet.[93]

We will have a lot of customization present in the both from a UI perspective as well as different data points that will be naturally in the game, but we don't want to open up the mod game just yet. That might be a decision we change in the future but, it's not planned for release.[93]Steven Sharif

In-game chat

In-game text chat channels include:[94][95]

In-game voice (VOIP) channels include:[97]

Voice chat is not proximity based.[97]

  • Has fully functional mute/chat preferences.

Importing images

The user interface will allow emblems and symbols to be designed in-game.[98][99]

No image import functionality is planned.[98]

Logging out

There will be a logout delay to prevent players from immediately logging out of combat.[100]

Multi-boxing

Multi-boxing/multi client polices haven't been finalized. In general, if a user has a legitimate account and is not botting then multi-boxing will be permitted.[101]

Mobile/web application

A mobile application and web interface allows players who are not logged into the game to have authority over certain services and mechanics.[102][103] Some functionality may come post-launch.[104]

Parlor games

There may be a mobile application that allows players to interact with parlor games (tavern games).[105]

Farmhands and NPC assistance

Based on node type and progression, players will be able to hire NPCs to work as farmhands on their freehold farms. Players will be able to command these farmhands online in-game as well as offline via an application (mobile app) or web interface.[106][103]

  • Crop rotation management.
  • Plant or harvest specific crops.
  • Sell food or crops.

City hall

City hall is a government building within a node.[107]

We want the City Hall to be the place where big decisions are made for each Node. It should be where the “ruling class” comes together and decides what to do (these decisions can quickly make them the “old ruling class” too).

Mayors and node governments use City hall to visualize and control activities within their node. These capabilities will also be available via mobile/web inteface.[108]

Character page

A character web page (character sheet) will be available closer to live launch that shows the following:[109]

The character page will be accessible in game by opening a browser through the UI.[110]

That's part of the character sheet desire for us which hopefully will be accessible in game as well by opening a browser through our UI where you can get back history of a character that that character has input themselves into journal entries that they may choose to share with others... For role play perspective we want people to be in depth with their characters.[110]Steven Sharif

The player can manage what info is shown on the character page.[109]

Marketplace UI

A marketplace UI lists the current items available for sale in the node like a town center billboard. This will potentially list items in other nodes if they are in the same economic region of a Metropolis.[111]

  • A player can't purchase directly from the marketplace UI. Instead it gives the location of player stalls where you may purchase the items.[112]

Item rendering

In-game rendering of dropped items (such as Gear and Currency) is not a planned feature.[113]
