Ashes of Creation Apocalypse (also referred to as Alpha-1 phase 1 and APOC)[4] will focus on the action side of combat.[5][6][7]

Apocalypse will be a free-to-play mode, so you won't even have to be a backer necessarily to play in it.[13]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing

Testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse arena (battlegrounds/BR mode) will proceed as follows.[16][17]

Glorious Ashes Community, we are expanding our testing group this weekend to include all Alpha 2 backers. We will also be lifting the NDA for the Phase 1 Arena testing going forward. Testing tonight will be starting at around 6:30pm and will be running till Sunday evening. With intermittent maintenances during the tests. We are happy to announce the testing is going very well and we are collecting a lot of useful data. In the weeks moving forward we will begin to announce invites to all beta backers and all A0 testers, before eventually inviting all registered users.[16]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges and Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode testing schedules will be similar.[17]

  • Alpha-1 testers will test for the first month.[17]
  • Alpha-2 testers will be invited following that.[17]
  • All other backers will be invited afterwards.[17]
  • Finally, testing will be opened to all registered users.[17]

In Apocalypse you have a scene where you have a squad in, or are solo or whatever. That scene will eventually become your house. Your freehold, exactly; and you will earn furniture to place in that freehold and you can build out your house and what-not through special achievements.[29]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale (also referred to as Alpha-1 phase 1 battlegrounds, Alpha-1 arena or BR mode)[4] is a Battle royale testing mode consisting of up to 100 players.[7][8]

  • This is a last man standing PvP combat mode.[31]
  • Weapons and armor found in the world have unique skills associated with them. These interact with the terrain from defensive, offensive and utility standpoints.[31]
  • Players can build buildings and structures such as watchtowers, defensive pillboxes and arcane structures.[31]
  • Everything in the world apart from rocks and trees is destructible.[32]

It's going to have a lot of high octane energy and activity. It's going to be very streamable. It's going to be no NDA. There's going to be a lot of different weapons and skills that were going to be testing. Each of the weapons and armor that you can find in the world are going to have unique spells and skills associated with them that interact with the terrain from a defensive standpoint, from a utility standpoint, from an offensive standpoint. It's going to be able for you to build buildings, complete structures, watchtowers and defensive pillboxes type structures: Arcane structures. Why did we go with Battle Royale as the first testable arena mode? And the answer for that is honestly, as we're testing and getting people into matches on our servers and testing the replication among players in a battlefield; and making sure that tech is present and capable for hundreds of players on the battlefield: We wanted to have a game mode that was still fun for players to test in: An environment that was fun to test in.[33]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle siege mode

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges are an Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode that aims to test castle siege mechanics.[8]

  • There will be 200 players in a match (100 v 100).[7][8]
  • Takes place in and around a large destructible castle.[14]
  • There will be objectives within the castle, such as killing guard captains.[8]
    • Defenders must protect key strategic objectives to maintain advantage.[14]
    • Attackers must destroy key strategic objectives to swing the battle in their favor.[14]
    • Objectives will affect the respawn timers of defenders or attackers.[8]
  • Class kits come into play during the testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges.[37]

Siege equipment

Siege weapons in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse are present in Castle sieges for attackers to utilize.[14][38]

  • Deployable and piloted by players.[14]

With regards to alpha one phase one however in the castle siege system... what will happen is static siege equipment that's placed in the map for the attackers to utilize that will present at focal points of PvP in the match where defenders will know where to target a specific area on the field in order to attack. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode is an Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode where 50 players defend a city against waves of incoming NPCs and player controlled monsters.[7][5][14]

  • Each wave is more difficult than the last.[14]
  • Between waves, players collect experience, money and weapons to take back to their hold to defend against the next wave.[8]
  • Monster coins enable players to join the game as part of the horde.[14]

Horde mode will include adaptive AI boss mechanics.[5] Rewards are obtained dependent on progress against these NPCs.[39]

Horde mode will absolutely include boss mechanics, so some of the ideas behind that is going to have a wave mode of a variety of NPCs will likely include some achievable cosmetics as well in that mode depending on how far you can get and those cosmetics will include pets of the NPCs that you face, so like a little miniature version of the NPC's and we'll update those as well, that you'll have in the MMO.[39]Steven Sharif

Horde mode is specifically for testing.[39]

It's a way that we thought it would be kind of fun to implement AI mechanics that we're looking to implement. Testing the you know the blackboard for the AI. Being able to have variable types of NPCs that have roles whether it be like a sniper, ranged, melee, boss, heroic you know kind of different AI focuses for those monsters during interesting situations.[39]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore takes place during the exodus from Verra.[40][41]

  • Some unlucky citizens didn't quite make it through the gateways in time and fell back to the planet to fight for survival.[40] This underpins the battle royale mode.[41]
  • Certain citizens are fighting for control over Castles that they believe to be last bastions of defense against the forces of corruption.[41] This underpins the castle siege mode.[41]
  • The last stand against the forces of corruption takes place in the horde mode.[41]

This lobby area where you see players load into- this is unfinished- but this will be one of the capital cities that you are about to enter through the great divine gateways... You're trying to flee; and in this particular game mode you are a part of some unlucky few who didn't quite make it out. Through skill choice, players can customize their combat experience to focus on tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both.[43]

  • It may not be possible to be able to fully spec into just action or tab targeted skills. There might be a 75% cap on choosing skills from any one type.[44]

Skill progressions, skill point allocation is determined by the player. The player will be able to choose either more tab-target oriented skills or more action-based skills and customize their playable experience to what accommodates their preference. From a balancing standpoint for us developers, we need to make sure that certain abilities house certain functions so that there's a balance between skill shots and tab-target abilities.[44]Steven Sharif

Action oriented and tab oriented versions of skills will have different characteristics. Variables will change based on which version is chosen.[6]

As an example: Let's say you're playing a ranged class. You could have an action-oriented power shot in your skill tree or you could have a single target power shot that ramps up and does more damage. [6]Steven Sharif

For the purposes of balance, certain skill types will be either tab or action oriented skills. For example:[45]

  • Hard Crowd control (CC)s may be housed in action oriented skills because they are skill shots that are more difficult to land.[45][44]
  • Softer CC's would be housed in tab-targeted abilities.[45]

Righteous fury Use your ultimate when your focus has reached 80%, to launch spears at all targets within your forward arc. Dealing damage and pulling them to you.[63] Pulls targets in a cone to the caster and does damage.[64] Adds target lock and hate. Time-to-kill

The Ashes of Creation MMORPG will have a time-to-kill (TTK) of around 30 seconds to a minute.[85]

In the MMORPG we really don't want to see any one-shots. The time-to-kill needs to be strategic and tactical.[86]Steven Sharif

Headshot mechanics

Headshot mechanics will be implemented in Ashes of Creation based on testing.[86]

  • If headshots are implemented, they will be along the lines of a higher critical chance.[86]

The idea behind headshot in the MMORPG is that, if we do implement headshots - part of this testing is to determine if we will - but if we were to implement headshots it will be along the lines of a higher critical chance. So basically hitting a skillshot on the head will increase significantly the opportunity for that damage to be critical. Will they one-shot? Absolutely not.[86]Steven Sharif

Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[87]

  • Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[87]
  • Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[87]

So if you take a look at like kind of what a head shot represents: A head shot is basically a critical hit; and players who are relying on tab skills will have that critical hit chance baked into their character. They will have that fixed chance every time they use an ability or use a spell or swing a weapon; and then somebody who is kind of preferring you know action based, in order to get that crit, they're not gonna be relying necessarily on their stats they're gonna be relying on whether they get a headshot or not, or are able to hit that critical spot on that character. So that's kind of the direction that we're going in that way. Again, it's gonna be hybridized so there's gonna be a little bit of both happening in both places.[87]Jeffrey Bard

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse active blocking

There is a Shield in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse that has its own hit box with hit points (HP). This shield can actively block projectiles.[88]

Player flagging/corruption

Player corruption is expected to be implemented in Alpha-1.[89]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat animations

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat animations are work-in-progress.[90]

The follow-through on some of the root animations and attacks feel a little floaty. A little sticky, yeah. So we are adjusting that as it is. Over the past month we've also seen feedback on the hitscan related to melee weapons and we've adjusted that into a cone.[90]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse class kits

Class kits come into play during the testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges.[37]

Class kits come into play with the castle siege mode. So when Castle sieges get implemented- which shouldn't be too far in the into the alpha-1- that's when we will implement the class structure for action combat and start playing with these class kits where you join in a particular class and you immediately have access to certain class specific skills. Class skills that you can predetermine as well from a host of skills to select from; and then those will be your base class skills you have access to; and then if you pick up weapons they'll augment those skills.[37]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse healing

Healing in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be reticle based (action targeted).[93]

We have a few design theories on action combat and healing to began with phase one. Part of that will be the implementation of a class system into the castle siege and horde mode of phase one. Those will be kits that play out as skills available from an action perspective. You'll be able to target in proximity, basically so positioning is going to matter. Importantly, for healers being close to the individual party members you wish to heal. Additionally, you'll have reticle based healing methods. This would be a template that could be launched in that direction as a pulse of heels or augments. So there's a lot of different systems are playing with that you'll see more of when we get to those when we get to the castle siege system and the Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode.[93]Steven Sharif

Healing skills will be part of Class kits.[92]

  • This will include proximity based, directional based and projectile based healing.[92]

Weapons and armor

Weapons and Armor are tied to skills in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[94]

  • Swapping between weapons will allow players to access the different skills on their hotbar.[94]
  • Certain armor pieces have utility and defensive skills, such as like Camouflage, Polymorph and Battlefield wall.[94]
  • Weapons are tied to one specific skill in early testing, but this may change.[95]

Weapons will have skills associated with them and they'll will rest on a hot bar and you can swap between the weapons on the hot bar and that'll allow you to access the different skills. Additionally the breastplate, the leggings: Those also have skills associated with them those are more utility and defensive abilities, such as like camouflage, polymorph, battlefield wall; that kind of stuff. Those are on the armor pieces and then they are associated with right now the VC hotkeys for their abilities.[94]Steven Sharif

Right now weapons are tied to one specific skill; and you know that's just again because we're so early in alpha 1; but well probably be changing that as we continue to iterate and test.[94]Steven Sharif

A revised weapon use combo system may be present in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[10]

The weapon use ability that was originally shown at PAX West 2017 was reduced to a basic form in Alpha-0.[107]

It's got a little bit of a cadence to it: you can tap, you can generate focus; and so from here we'll look at ways in the future to take that and make it more interesting and more fun and more engaging.[107]Akil Hooper

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor comes with associated skills/abilities. Armor also grants damage mitigation. Armor that has lost its damage mitigation can be recharged/repaired to restore damage mitigation points.[40] There are two types of armor: Upper and lower body.[109]

Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. Progression and experience tracking for participation in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing will entitle players to achieve unique cosmetic rewards. These earned rewards will carry over in player's accounts to live launch.[13][120]

One of the ways we want to give back to the Community in participating in this testing is allowing for progress, quests, achievements rewards to be gained in Apocalypse... You will have rewards and quests and achievements that you and your participation and your performance in that game, whether it be the Castle Siege, the Horde Mode or the Battle Royale will earn you cosmetics. There will be costumes. There will be mounts to earn. There will be housing and furniture. There will be emotes. There will be weapon variants. A lot of these are what we have in production for our project Ashes of Creation, we apply some variants and skins for and make them only available through participating in helping us test these different game modes. These cosmetics reflect the lore of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse, which is set before the fall.[120]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse players can establish Player housing and save Furniture arrangements for use in the full game.[11][13]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse arena will include an early access Character creator.[11][125]

As we develop our character creation screen we'll implement that into arena mode. So can create characters there, save those characters. When you make a character in Ashes you can port over that save.[125]Steven Sharif

I would like to have the option for players to go in spend time, create characters save that character and then have it available in their suite their character creation suite as an option to preload at launch that they can take that's those settings and launch the character. I would love for there to be community rewards and competitions for the best made characters that we could do like a monthly kind of thing around and/or additionally I'd like for there to be implementation of housing and a housing suite that you can save your furniture load out as well for building out the interior of housing. I don't know if we'll be able to get to that. It is a cherry on top of the icing. And we'll see how the schedule looks with that regard.[126]Steven Sharif

The Ashes of Creation Apocalypse camera is tied a third-person view, over the shoulder, for the purposes of reticle specific zoom options and aim-down-sights. This is solely intended for the current action combat.[132]

The idea behind our hybrid system is going to obviously be customizable from a traditional higher up third-person view that is seen in MMORPGs; and then to have that customizable so that more action-oriented players might be able to come in closer to the character and have more feasibility there.[132]Steven Sharif
