Alpha-1 (previously called Alpha-1 phase 2) is a testing release of Ashes of Creation.[4] Alpha-1 will test hybrid action/tab combat.[5]

Alpha-1 servers

Alpha-1 servers will be provisioned in the following regions.[13]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse server selection is driven by the party leader. Whatever region they have selected will apply to their friends and squad.[15]

Alpha-1 servers will support 1,500 concurrent users.[9]

Alpha-1 participation

There are slightly under 10,000 participants in Alpha-1 testing.[16]

Our target goal from a testing standpoint was ten thousand players. We have just under that - I believe we have 9,300, and we wanted to keep that manageable. Our intent is to have two servers that we have up and running for Alpha 1 Phase 2, with 5000 on each. Our goal ultimately is 10,000 concurrent, but we’re going to begin stress-testing at 5000.[17]Steven Sharif

Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2 are not covered by NDA.[18]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale stress testing NDA was lifted on 19 October 2018 at 6:30PM (PDT).[19][20]

Stress testers may discuss their experience. However visuals, including streams, video recording and screenshots for the stress test are under NDA. Ashes of Creation Apocalypse

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse (also referred to as Alpha-1 phase 1 and APOC)[28] will focus on the action side of combat.[5][29][30]

Apocalypse will be a free-to-play mode, so you won't even have to be a backer necessarily to play in it.[36]Steven Sharif

In Apocalypse, you land in a world on the brink of destruction. The only way out is to be the last one standing. It is an arena based game which will support a number of different game modes, including battle royale-style gameplay, castle sieges, and gigantic monster hordes! Not only is Ashes of Creation: Apocalypse an exciting standalone experience, but we're also using it to help test new tech and features for Ashes of Creation - the more you play, the closer we'll get to the final launch of our MMO. Not only that, but any rewards you earn in Apocalypse will carry over to the MMO as well! Our high fantasy setting, the vast array of gear and spells, and our massively destructible environments make for an experience unlike anything you’ve played. Testing of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse arena (battlegrounds/BR mode) will proceed as follows.[19][43]

Glorious Ashes Community, we are expanding our testing group this weekend to include all Alpha 2 backers. We will also be lifting the NDA for the Phase 1 Arena testing going forward. Testing tonight will be starting at around 6:30pm and will be running till Sunday evening. With intermittent maintenances during the tests. We are happy to announce the testing is going very well and we are collecting a lot of useful data. In the weeks moving forward we will begin to announce invites to all beta backers and all A0 testers, before eventually inviting all registered users.[19]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges and Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode testing schedules will be similar.[43]

  • Alpha-1 testers will test for the first month.[43]
  • Alpha-2 testers will be invited following that.[43]

  • Finally, testing will be opened to all registered users.[43]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse release

The Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be released as a bonus to the community.[54][55]

It's not going to be in the MMORPG. But it is possible that we could allow it to persist as a side game: A side mode I guess. Depending on if our testers actually enjoy it.[56]Steven Sharif

You'll be able to share everything you earn there in the MMORPG when it launches; and the arena system will persist post-launch as well. So this will be an all-action based arena that exists side-by-side with Ashes of Creation as a mode that players will get to plan and earn unique cosmetics in.[34]Steven Sharif

Alpha 1 testers will test each arena mode a full month before that mode is granted to registered users. This phase is a bonus phase of development and we will run the arena during development and post launch as a matchmaking mode of Ashes.[35]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale mode

In Apocalypse you have a scene where you have a squad in, or are solo or whatever. That scene will eventually become your house. Your freehold, exactly; and you will earn furniture to place in that freehold and you can build out your house and what-not through special achievements.[59]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale (also referred to as Alpha-1 phase 1 battlegrounds, Alpha-1 arena or BR mode)[28] is a Battle royale testing mode consisting of up to 100 players.[30][31]

  • This is a last man standing PvP combat mode.[61]
  • Weapons and armor found in the world have unique skills associated with them. These interact with the terrain from defensive, offensive and utility standpoints.[61]
  • Players can build buildings and structures such as watchtowers, defensive pillboxes and arcane structures.[61]
  • Everything in the world apart from rocks and trees is destructible.[62]

It's going to have a lot of high octane energy and activity. It's going to be very streamable. It's going to be no NDA. There's going to be a lot of different weapons and skills that were going to be testing. Each of the weapons and armor that you can find in the world are going to have unique spells and skills associated with them that interact with the terrain from a defensive standpoint, from a utility standpoint, from an offensive standpoint. It's going to be able for you to build buildings, complete structures, watchtowers and defensive pillboxes type structures: Arcane structures. You're going to have a lot of fun activity there.[61]Steven Sharif

Why did we go with Battle Royale as the first testable arena mode? And the answer for that is honestly, as we're testing and getting people into matches on our servers and testing the replication among players in a battlefield; and making sure that tech is present and capable for hundreds of players on the battlefield: We wanted to have a game mode that was still fun for players to test in: An environment that was fun to test in.[63]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle siege mode

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges are an Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode that aims to test castle siege mechanics.[31]

The Castle Siege mode is another example of a playable slice of the MMORPG that Apocalypse is providing early testing for. While it’s a somewhat smaller scale experience than the one you’ll have in the MMO, the overall flow of taking and defending a castle will remain similar. There’s some additional systems you’ll see in the final product, like the influence of Nodes over the available defensive emplacements, the crafting and deploying of custom siege weapons, and the summoning of siege monsters. These are all things that we’ll be adding on top of this mode upon our release of Ashes of Creation.[66]Margaret Krohn

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode is an Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing mode where 50 players defend a city against waves of incoming NPCs and player controlled monsters.[30][5][24]

  • Each wave is more difficult than the last.[24]
  • Between waves, players collect experience, money and weapons to take back to their hold to defend against the next wave.[31]
  • Monster coins enable players to join the game as part of the horde.[24]

Horde mode will include adaptive AI boss mechanics.[5] Rewards are obtained dependent on progress against these NPCs.[69]

Horde mode will absolutely include boss mechanics, so some of the ideas behind that is going to have a wave mode of a variety of NPCs will likely include some achievable cosmetics as well in that mode depending on how far you can get and those cosmetics will include pets of the NPCs that you face, so like a little miniature version of the NPC's and we'll update those as well, that you'll have in the MMO.[69]Steven Sharif

Horde mode is specifically for testing.[69]

It's a way that we thought it would be kind of fun to implement AI mechanics that we're looking to implement. Testing the you know the blackboard for the AI. Being able to have variable types of NPCs that have roles whether it be like a sniper, ranged, melee, boss, heroic you know kind of different AI focuses for those monsters during interesting situations.[69]Steven Sharif

There will be an option in the lobby where you are capable of joining a guild based match that you can link parties together up to a maximum of twenty individuals.[70]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat

Through skill choice, players can customize their combat experience to focus on tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both.[72]

  • It may not be possible to be able to fully spec into just action or tab targeted skills. There might be a 75% cap on choosing skills from any one type.[73]

Skill progressions, skill point allocation is determined by the player. The player will be able to choose either more tab-target oriented skills or more action-based skills and customize their playable experience to what accommodates their preference. From a balancing standpoint for us developers, we need to make sure that certain abilities house certain functions so that there's a balance between skill shots and tab-target abilities.[73]Steven Sharif

Action oriented and tab oriented versions of skills will have different characteristics. Variables will change based on which version is chosen.[29]

As an example: Let's say you're playing a ranged class. You could have an action-oriented power shot in your skill tree or you could have a single target power shot that ramps up and does more damage. [29]Steven Sharif

For the purposes of balance, certain skill types will be either tab or action oriented skills. For example:[74]

  • Hard Crowd control (CC)s may be housed in action oriented skills because they are skill shots that are more difficult to land.[74][73]
  • Softer CC's would be housed in tab-targeted abilities.[74]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse Time-to-kill

The Ashes of Creation MMORPG will have a time-to-kill (TTK) of around 30 seconds to a minute.[114]

In the MMORPG we really don't want to see any one-shots. The time-to-kill needs to be strategic and tactical.[115]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse Headshot mechanics

Headshot mechanics will be implemented in Ashes of Creation based on testing.[115]

  • If headshots are implemented, they will be along the lines of a higher critical chance.[115]

The idea behind headshot in the MMORPG is that, if we do implement headshots - part of this testing is to determine if we will - but if we were to implement headshots it will be along the lines of a higher critical chance. So basically hitting a skillshot on the head will increase significantly the opportunity for that damage to be critical. Will they one-shot? Absolutely not.[115]Steven Sharif

Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[116]

  • Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[116]
  • Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[116]

So if you take a look at like kind of what a head shot represents: A head shot is basically a critical hit; and players who are relying on tab skills will have that critical hit chance baked into their character. They will have that fixed chance every time they use an ability or use a spell or swing a weapon; and then somebody who is kind of preferring you know action based, in order to get that crit, they're not gonna be relying necessarily on their stats they're gonna be relying on whether they get a headshot or not, or are able to hit that critical spot on that character. So that's kind of the direction that we're going in that way. Again, it's gonna be hybridized so there's gonna be a little bit of both happening in both places.[116]Jeffrey Bard

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse active blocking

The Paladin's Might shield in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse has its own hit box with hit points (HP). It can actively block projectiles.[117]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse class kits

Six classes will be present in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges and Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode.[118]

These classes relate to the trinity of classes: Tank, DPS and Support.[118][119]

  • Weapon skills are applied to augment a class' base skills.[67]
  • Base class skills may be able to be selected from a host of available skills for that class based on a player's progression within that season.[67][120]

We had a little bit of an idea that we're going to explore with regards to each of the classes having a range of skills and abilities that players can customize that skill kit based on their progression within a season, let's say; and that progression can be gained from any of the modes and it would grant you the ability to kind of customize that skill kit for the before the siege mode or the horde mode. But that's something that might come at a later date.[120]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse classes only apply to Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges and Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode.[121]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse healing

Healing in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be reticle based (action targeted).[122]

We have a few design theories on action combat and healing to began with phase one. Part of that will be the implementation of a class system into the castle siege and horde mode of phase one. Those will be kits that play out as skills available from an action perspective. You'll be able to target in proximity, basically so positioning is going to matter. Importantly, for healers being close to the individual party members you wish to heal. Additionally, you'll have reticle based healing methods. This would be a template that could be launched in that direction as a pulse of heels or augments. So there's a lot of different systems are playing with that you'll see more of when we get to those when we get to the castle siege system and the Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode.[122]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat animations

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat animations are work-in-progress.[126]

The follow-through on some of the root animations and attacks feel a little floaty. A little sticky, yeah. So we are adjusting that as it is. Over the past month we've also seen feedback on the hitscan related to melee weapons and we've adjusted that into a cone.[126]Steven Sharif

Weapons and armor

Weapons and Armor are tied to skills in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[127]

  • Swapping between weapons will allow players to access the different skills on their hotbar.[127]
  • Certain armor pieces have utility and defensive skills, such as like Camouflage, Polymorph and Battlefield wall.[127]
  • Weapons are tied to one specific skill in early testing, but this may change.[128]

Weapons will have skills associated with them and they'll will rest on a hot bar and you can swap between the weapons on the hot bar and that'll allow you to access the different skills. Additionally the breastplate, the leggings: Those also have skills associated with them those are more utility and defensive abilities, such as like camouflage, polymorph, battlefield wall; that kind of stuff. Those are on the armor pieces and then they are associated with right now the VC hotkeys for their abilities.[127]Steven Sharif

Right now weapons are tied to one specific skill; and you know that's just again because we're so early in alpha 1; but well probably be changing that as we continue to iterate and test.[127]Steven Sharif

  1. Blue – uncommon.[130]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse weapons each have an associated ability. Each weapon has three different tiers.[129] Ranged weapons are currently hitscan based, with the exception of Nightfall, which is projectile-based. Melee weapons are currently cone hitscan based.[131]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor comes with associated skills/abilities.[143] There are two types of armor: Upper and lower body.[144]

Armor grants damage mitigation.[143]

What you're seeing currently in the Battle Royale feature of Apocalypse is you find armor and that gives you an armor pool and then you can regenerate your armor. What we're going to be experiencing in the castle siege form is each class will have a set amount of armor that they join the match with that's already full and a set amount of health that's already full. Upon losing armor you can either have your armor replenished by an Engineer or there there may be ability for you to find items that are in the world or there could be objectives that replenish armor for the entire team, such as one of the buffs for taking a control point.[145]Steven Sharif

Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[152]Mat Broome

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[153]

The idea behind our hybrid system is going to obviously be customizable from a traditional higher up third-person view that is seen in MMORPGs; and then to have that customizable so that more action-oriented players might be able to come in closer to the character and have more feasibility there.[161]Steven Sharif

As we develop our character creation screen we'll implement that into arena mode. So can create characters there, save those characters. When you make a character in Ashes you can port over that save.[170]Steven Sharif

I would like to have the option for players to go in spend time, create characters save that character and then have it available in their suite their character creation suite as an option to preload at launch that they can take that's those settings and launch the character. I would love for there to be community rewards and competitions for the best made characters that we could do like a monthly kind of thing around and/or additionally I'd like for there to be implementation of housing and a housing suite that you can save your furniture load out as well for building out the interior of housing. I don't know if we'll be able to get to that. It is a cherry on top of the icing. And we'll see how the schedule looks with that regard.[171]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse progression

The first chapter of Apocalypse is The Exodus. It takes part in the initial stages of the fall and sets the scene for upcoming chapters.[172]

You're going to have an adventuring path and that adventuring path is going to come with weekly quests and daily quests that you can participate in that will be available for the Castle sieges for the Horde and for the Battle Royale; and as you complete these quests you're going to gain experience; and right now you have up to 50 levels, which matches the intended cap for Ashes of Creation. Fifty levels of the adventure path that you can advance in; and as you advance in each of these levels you're going to be unlocking certain assets, such as these weapon skins. Now the great thing about player's progress in Apocalypse is that you will share the same account from Apocalypse to Ashes of Creation the MMORPG and anything that you earn in Apocalypse will be in Ashes of Creation the MMORPG- a unique as a skin exactly: A skin that you will have access to for helping us test write Apocalypse and preparing these different Alpha and Beta stages for Ashes of Creation.[174]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore

This lobby area where you see players load into- this is unfinished- but this will be one of the capital cities that you are about to enter through the great divine gateways... You're trying to flee; and in this particular game mode you are a part of some unlucky few who didn't quite make it out. And unfortunately after entering the great divine gateway fell back to the planet.[143]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore takes place during the exodus from Verra.[143][175] [176]

Initially you're playing the Battle Royale you're a part of the last group of survivors to try to leave Verra. And as you're leaving you get cut off. The slipstream ends and you start falling back to the planet. Now the activities that occur and the fighting amongst yourselves is a result of the influence of corruption: Corrupting your soul basically; and as we move into the Castle Siege mode that's where you see the survivors now trying to seek refuge in some of the last defendable bastions of of society. So you're kind of fighting over those for your families and your friends to get into that keep to try to ride out the storm so to say; and that's what the Castle Siege is predicated on. Then moving into the Hordes is this is now the final showdown. How long can you last? And that's kind of the narrative behind Apocalypse as a whole.[172]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore is split into chapters. Currently every ten weeks a new chapter will be released.[172]

What happened before you came back? What did your ancestors have to go through? What did these civilizations have to endure? ... You get to experience the world of Ashes of Creation. You get to take a peek under the hood of the art assets and the style that that art will be when you play the game; and at the same time while you're doing all of that and we're hitting the servers with as many people as possible, we are continuing production and implementing new art; and we are updating those those chapters of this story; and that's what each season so speak is called for us is a chapter. In fact the first chapter of Apocalypse will be titled the Exodus. So chapter one is the Exodus and players will have an opportunity to earn unique rewards in each chapter. So that chapter's period of time is roughly ten weeks- between eight and twelve. We'll see how those go, but right now it's set for ten weeks; and every ten weeks you're going to see an introduction of new content.[172]Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse quests

Questing in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse contains lore that gives insight to the happenings on Verra during the fall.[172]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse cosmetic rewards

Progression and experience tracking for participation in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing will entitle players to achieve unique cosmetic rewards. These earned rewards will carry over in player's accounts to live launch.[36][180]

One of the ways we want to give back to the Community in participating in this testing is allowing for progress, quests, achievements rewards to be gained in Apocalypse... You will have rewards and quests and achievements that you and your participation and your performance in that game, whether it be the Castle Siege, the Horde Mode or the Battle Royale will earn you cosmetics. There will be costumes. There will be mounts to earn. There will be housing and furniture. There will be emotes. There will be weapon variants. A lot of these are what we have in production for our project Ashes of Creation, we apply some variants and skins for and make them only available through participating in helping us test these different game modes. And they will carry over to your account on the MMORPG.[36]Steven Sharif

The account used for Apocalypse is the same account used for the MMORPG. Unique skins earned in Apocalypse will be added to the MMORPG as rewards for helping to prepare for the Alpha and Beta stages of Ashes of Creation.[174]

So it's not that you'll be able to equip necessarily an item at level one. These are all cosmetic skins. Again we are not about the pay-to-win or pay-to-convenience life. What we want to do instead is as you earn, craft, or find equipment in the MMORPG, these skins that you've earned in Apocalypse will be available at certain tiers, levels and/or access points. So for example, we have different grades of mounts right. We have the base one land mounts. We have the the Royal mounts. We have the flying mounts if you're a mayor or King or Queen. We have legendary mounts. These classes of mounts will have available skins associated with those particular classes... If you have the Ramstider skin that you've earned from Apocalypse, you'll be able to apply that to your first land mount, which will probably be earned within the first five levels you'll earn a land mount. However if you have let's say for example the Griffin, which will be a glideable mount. I'm sorry what's the name of the what's the name of the night one. The midnight- is the midnight bird or something like? The Night Hunter. I think that's it. If you have that skin you'll only be able to apply that skin to a Royal mount so you'll still have to earn these things. Remember our position is that of: You need to earn these things in Ashes first. They're not purchasable or earned outside in Apocalypse and you're granted that immediately. These are skins that you apply to the things you earn in Ashes.[182]Steven Sharif

These cosmetics reflect the lore of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse, which is set before the fall.[180]

One thing that we announced to our alpha one backers that I know they love clarity on is that we'll also be including progression and experience tracking for participation and testing that will entitle them to some unique cosmetics as well that reflect on the lore of this setting, which is before the fall. So you'll be able to acquire some armors that reflect some of the ancient cultures of Verra that you will earn and hold for live launch.[180]Steven Sharif
